MA.01 Minorca
Design and construction of a small structure, used as a nursery, in a villa in Minorca. Located within the property’s vegetable garden and raised on steel plinths resting on a concrete podium, this minimalist unit, made of solid Iroko wood, is designed to house seeds that will then be planted in the adjacent land. A primary structural framework in solid wood, which is both sturdy and lightweight, punctuates the design of the facades with a constant rhythm and, thanks to its particular geometry, allows a series of glass panels to slide inside it. In this way, depending on requirements, the facades can remain completely closed or be deconstructed, allowing light to enter in a constant dialogue between inside and outside.
The construction system, based on complete autonomy between the supporting frame and the cladding panels, allows for easy replacement of damaged elements without affecting the entire structure. The same construction principle is applied to the design of the roof, which is completely independent and fits into the supporting grid, thus meeting the need for a more or less sloped roof depending on the environmental conditions of the unit’s installation site. Ease of adaptation in all three dimensions, structural autonomy between parts, and easy replacement of individual components are the design criteria that make this micro-architecture extremely flexible and exportable to very different socio-environmental contexts.
